February 9, 2023The new San Tomas Aquino Creek Trailhead in Santa Clara is a beautiful green space that offers hikers, bikers and families a way to enjoy nature without getting into their cars. This off-street trail connects many areas of the city.
Start at Cabrillo Avenue, next to San Tomas Expressway
The trail route begins in a parking lot at Cabrillo Avenue and the San Tomas Expressway. From there, you can walk or take a shuttle to get to the trailhead. This area also has several on-street bicycle lanes that run along Cabrillo Avenue and Calabazas Blvd. You can ride your bike on these bike lanes and they will help you to avoid traffic while still being able to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Follow the trail downhill
The first section of the trail follows Calabazas Blvd. The trail is on the left side of the street next to the creek and has a buffer lane where cars can’t drive in. This makes the trail safer for cyclists and pedestrians, allowing them to cross busy El Camino Real without worrying about a car coming up behind them.
At the intersection of Calabazas Boulevard and Pomeroy Avenue, the bike lane switches to the right side of the road. You’ll have to watch your speed, though, because a car will often pass in front of you on this narrow lane. Once you pass through this part of the trail, it’s time to head north. The trail will take you to the city limits of Santa Clara. On your way, you’ll pass through the Walter E. Schmidt Youth Activity Center, Cabrillo Middle School and Bowers Park. These parks are great places to visit if you’re looking for a place to picnic or play.
Look for the green lane marking the bike path, and you’ll have a great time on this trail. There are plenty of spots to stop and look around and take in the scenery. You’ll also see signs on the road pointing to where to go if you’re interested in taking a swim or going to the skate park. These spots are great for kids and adults alike.
To sum up, the San Tomas Aquino Creek Trailhead is a wonderful place to explore and discover nature, as well as to enjoy some of the best views in Santa Clara. From its start at Cabrillo Avenue, you can take a shuttle or ride your bike on the off-street trails while taking in all the scenery this trail has to offer. Whether you’re a family looking for something to do on the weekends or a cyclist who wants to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this trail is sure to delight you.
